The Nabire Regency is one of the districts in the Papua Province, which has coastal areas and mountainous hinterland. It is located in the southern area of the Cendrawasih Bay and in the bird-neck area of Papua Island. In the district’s central mountains lives an ethnic group of and in coastal areas Watee ethnic people, whose livelihoods are tradition farming, hunting and fishing
Access is by air transport such as single-engine Cessna of AMA or MAF owned by the Catholic and Protestant Churches. Twin Otter owned by Merpati, Trigana Airlines, Dornier owned by Express Air,and others.
However recently, the government has at least tried to break through the isolation by constructing a rough road from Nabire to Tembagapura. At present the road construction has been completed to the capital city of Paniai district. Unfortunately, it is often cut off due to flooding or landslides.
Nabire Regency’s population is 187,743, scattered in 17 areas. |
